West Fresno Madera Sectional BIG & Banking Contest
Fresno, Ca- January not only starts the begining of the new semester, but also the start of judging season. In January members join judging teams coached by the FFA advisors and compete in contests held by colleges in California, including Cal Poly, Fresno State and UC Davis. These students practice for weeks to compete against hundreds of FFA members in each event. This year Madera FFA's season started at the sectional BIG and Banking Contest held at Fresno Central West Campus on January 21, 2015. The contest is attended by all 13 schools in the section.
The Madera Farm Baureau once again sponsored the Banking Contest. Members study and learn about the banking system and how farmers use it to further their ranches. This years team consisted of Justine Esparza, Jenae Hansen, Virat Kang, Vanessa Maravilla and Clayton Sheehan. The team placed second, with Virat Kang placing 1st overall at the contest.
The Best Informed Greenhand contest was also held that evening. In the Best Informed Greenhand contest members learn about the history of the FFA Organization and take a 200 question test on the subject. Teams must attend their sectional contest in order to compete at the State Finals contest in May. This years team was made up of Omar Hernandez, Axel Morales, Leslie Arevalo, Leslie Mendoza and Gerardo Padilla. The BIG team was on their A game placing 1st in the contest, with Leslie Arevalo placing 1st. Axel Morales placing 2nd, Gerardo Padilla placing 3rd and Omar Hernandez placing 5th.
All members of both teams represented Madera well and while the banking teams season is now over, the BIG team continues to prepare for their nect contest inMarch at UC Davis.
